Dragon Ball Super: Broly is officially coming to North American theatres in 2019.

Funimation Films has acquired the theatrical rights to the new Dragon Ball Super movie, which is set to hit U.S. and Canadian theatres in January 2019. Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the twentieth film in the franchise and is based on the story, screenplay and character designs of original creator Akira Toriyama.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly follows the events of Dragon Ball Super, which has the first new Dragon Ball storyline from Toriyama in more than 18 years. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are largely based off of Toriyama’s manga series, though his involvement in Dragon Ball GT was decidedly minimal.

The film will delve into the origins of Saiyans and the super-villain Frieza and will take place shortly after the infamous Tournament of Power. Broly himself is an intensely strong Saiyan, though Toriyama reportedly had little involvement in his initial creation. After Broly was featured in multiple movies, Toriyama decided to revisit him, updating Broly and “adding a new side” to his character.

Funimation is a sponsor of the Dragon Ball North America Tour in 2018, which will travel to cities in the U.S. and Canada and will make its debut at San Diego Comic-Con with a special panel on July 19. The panel will consist of celebrity fans and patrons of the film.

In other anime news, a few classic Dragon Ball Z movies are coming to U.S. theatres this fall. Also, be sure to check out all of the incredible Dragon Ball cosplay at Anime Expo 2018 in the slideshow below.
